The start of my art often begins without explanation. If I overthink, nothing ever gets started—it needs to feel lighthearted and spontaneous. This piece, titled Fences, emerged in that spirit.
While the work is playful in its creation, it quietly touches on deeper themes. It explores connection and disconnection, with one house fenced in and the other open. These boundaries echo the complicated relationship with land in my hometown of Opotiki, where historical land divisions create tension. The fences embody a sense of both protection and isolation, standing between freedom and control.
